Why is it that almost every incoming freshman thinks that college isn’t going to be all that different from high school? Every year a brand spanking new batch of 18 year olds heads off to college. Some make it and some fall victim to the enormous amount of stress generated by college. While every student is different, there are some common causes of college stress that should be addressed.

A leading cause of college stress is the amount of change student’s face. Everything about their lives changes from where they lay their head at night to what they eat for breakfast. Unfortunately, a lot of people have a hard time with change – it can be a leading cause of stress.

While the financial pressures of college do not affect all students, many of them are. Students who are paying their own way or helping out with their tuition often find trying to balance work and school difficult and stressful. Unfortunately a student has to work they must find a way to balance these two activities.

College is also, to a large degree, self-paced. Vast amounts of reading material, large reports and exams are, for the most part, the responsibility of the student. Many have difficulty with the fact that their professors are not reminding them constantly of assignments and dates. Unless a student finds a way to manage their studies, they can end up very stressed out.

Finally, many students find themselves stressed out by their performance. Students who aren’t pulling the grades they are accustomed to find themselves feeling overwhelmed and stressed out. Until such students find a way to address their grades or except lower standards, they are likely to remain stressed.

Almost all college students are stressed out about one thing or another – the trick is learning to manage the stress before it gets out of hand.

Admit it, when you finally arrived for your first day at college, excitement filled you. Likely, it was your first time away from home for more than a few nights. Freedom at last. That night, you met some of your neighbors, walked around campus, and went home to settle into your new, and probably uncomfortable, dorm bed. Whether the stress hit you then or later, at some point you felt it. That sick feeling in the pit of your stomach. College is different from high school. Now, it is all on you to succeed or fail. Learning how to handle the stress of college can help make sure that at the end of the semester you have passing grades.

It starts with planning. One of the biggest mistakes a college freshmen can make is falling into the belief that there is time for everything – later. Once you have gone to all of your classes, take a few hours to check the work load and develop a schedule that will allow you to get all of your reading and assignments done. Plan extra time for tests and papers.

Next, remember that part of the college experience is having fun. It is all right to go out with your friends and enjoy the nightlife of a college campus. Don’t have so much fun that it impacts your studies. Going out every night of the week will cause you to wake up one morning late for an exam you didn’t study – automatic stress.

Finally, eat and sleep right. These two factors alone can help you deal with stress. Get at least seven hours of sleep each night. Eat breakfast lunch and dinner. When you have time, go for a walk or a jog. Keeping yourself physically healthy will make a big difference.

A huge university is going to be packed with way more extracurricular activities than your tiny high school ever had. Joining a college club or activity is one of the best ways to meet friends and get active on campus. School yourself on some of the popular higher education clubs and activities before you get to campus.

Model United Nations Society
At face value, a Model United Nations Society (or MUN, as it’s commonly known) sounds ridiculous: college students get around and simulate the United Nations. Below the surface, however, you’ll find international awareness, heady ideas, and some great debate. MUN Societies often travel around the country to participate in other college’s conferences, so it’s a great way to get academically-excused absences for travel.

Honor Societies.
You probably had one honor society in high school. In college, you’ll be faced with dozens. There are campus-wide honor societies, transfer student societies, and societies for your specific major or department. Be forewarned that most honor societies have dues and initial fees, so don’t rush out and join them all.

Sororities and Fraternities.
One of the biggest decisions you’ll have to make is whether to go Greek or not. Sororities and fraternities are some of the best ways to meet people on campus. If you’re a social butterfly who loves a busy calendar or you want a group of guys to have your back, this is the organization for you. Be forewarned that Greek organizations are huge time commitments and can be pretty expensive over the course of the year. Don’t commit unless you’re sure your schedule, grades, and bank account can handle a sorority or fraternity.

Brace yourselves: it’s time to write your dreaded admissions essay. Don’t treat your admissions essay lightly. Your essay is one of the biggest ways colleges look at you, your writing ability, and your creativity. Use it like an extension of you: give them a glimpse of who you are! Here are some tips for knocking that admissions essay out of the park.

Use Active Voice.
Don’t look so puzzled– you took four years of English, right? Active voice simply means the subject is doing the action. Say, “I played the lead role in Annie Get Your Gun,” not “The lead role in Annie Get Your Gun was performed by me.”

Use Concrete Nouns.
The key to good writing? More nouns, less adjectives. Pack your essay full of specific nouns. Don’t say “tree” when you mean “dogwood.” Don’t say “car” when you mean “1967 Mustang.” This will paint a much clearer picture for the admissions readers.

Use Strong Verbs.
You don’t want your essay to read like a Dick and Jane book. “See Student. See Student Excel at Academics. Excel, Student, Excel!” Pick verbs that pack a punch. At a loss for words? Check out this list for a wealth of strong, active verbs.

Outline, Outline, Outline.
Think you can sit down and write your essay out on the fly? Think again. Define a strong structure for your essay before you write it. An outline will give you a solid road map to follow as you write. Whatever you do, do not skip this step.

Struggling a bit in school? Looking to improve your grades? Eat a carrot and hop on the treadmill, because studies show that healthier students do better academically than their unhealthier counterparts. Here are some easy ways to get healthier and improve your academics at the same time.

Get Some Sleep.
Students who are “morning people” do better in school than “night owls.” You need to work on improving your sleep hygiene: go to bed at the same time every night. Wake up at the same time. Perform the same pre-bed ritual every night. This regular cycle will reset your body’s sleep clock, so you can have a much more fulfilling night’s rest. Improved sleep will give you more focus, more energy, and less stress.

Start exercising.
Exercise reduces depression and acts as a great stress reliever. Don’t even think about using academic work or deadlines as an excuse to get out of exercising. Nearly every college has an on-campus gym and machines like stationary bicycles or ellipticals can allow you to study and exercise at the same time.

Eat healthier.
Eating healthy doesn’t just make your body look better in a bathing suit. It also improves your self-esteem and gives you significantly higher energy. Keep some veggies in your microfridge that are easy to prepare in a dorm room, like salad mix or carrot sticks. Cut back on that cafeteria pizza, too.

Stop smoking.
Studies show that non-smokers have higher overall GPAs than non-smokers.

When you improve your health, you get a great burst of self-esteem that carries over into your academics as well. Recruit your roommate and get motivated to become healthier together.

One of the main goals associated with higher education is to do well on examinations and complete the course. One way a person will do well in college is to study effectively. Although the mental capacity differs from individual to individual, even students with lower IQs can do very well when the proper planning is involved. The following are some ways that will help those individual in college get the most out of learning.

There are usually two types of students in higher education; Those who try to achieve high marks on exams and those who attempt to gain as much knowledge as they can. It is not uncommon for the student who is focused on receiving high marks, not to retain much of the information offered in the course. In addition, a student who primarily focuses on gaining knowledge may not always do well on tests. Both may cause students a huge amount of college stress but there are methods of improvement.

Whether a person takes classes in higher education through a more traditional realm or prefers online learning with a computer, there are methods of summarization and memorization that students can incorporate that will help them grasp information in as little time as possible. This may be especially beneficial to the student taking courses online, has a family, and works full time. In order to do well in the work force it is important to grasp as much information offered in the course as possible as it related to your possible employment. Using techniques that will help you retain information can be extremely beneficial.

There are strategies that a person taking online courses can develop which will enable him/her to get the most out of their online learning experience. Online learning is a type of distance learning via the Internet that enables students to incorporate collaborative communication with their instructors and other students over a duration of time.

The Internet makes online learning convenient for those with busy schedules because it allows them to pace themselves, it offers quick feedback, and there is instant interaction. However, in order to do their best, they should be open to sharing their educational, work, and life experiences to encourage an added amount of feedback and interaction with both students and instructor. When the visual barriers and eliminated, this can give the student the benefit of expressing themselves more openly.

Many students who take educational courses in a traditional classroom setting have very poor writing skills. Since much of the classroom communication is written with online learning, it is essential that a student is confident in their writing ability. A good stategy that the online student may want to incorporate is taking a writing/English course prior to the online course and improve any weaknesses they may have in their writing skills.

It is also important that the student who takes online course be responsible and self motivated. There are methods many instructors use to determine if a student is bored or confused that are not possible with online learning. It is up to the student to make a real commitment to follow instruction and submit immediate communication if they experience problems.

Many people have run into situations in which they are short on money, or they are faced with financial obstacles or obligations that they cannot get through in their current financial situation. No one is immune to this type of experience. If you find yourself in a a situation in which you have to pay a bill or deal with a financial obligation, it becomes necessary for you to brainstorm what opportunities and options are available before you take action.

How to Deal With a Financial Emergency

If you find yourself in a poor financial situation, what options are available for you to explore? Are bank loans an option? Do you have money stashed away? Can you ask a friend or family member for some help? It’s important to consider what your options are, especially if you have to pursue several options to amass enough money for whatever financial obligation you are tackling.

Make sure you consider all of your options prior to making financial decisions since you are bound to have at least a few different choices to make before you come to any conclusions. Making financial decisions takes time, effort, thoughts, and planning. Remember to consider that many financial options require repayment, especially in short-term lending situations.

The recession has done a number on the real estate industry. Now many people are looking to save money by renting out an apartment. While it’s a buyer’s market, many people are unable to buy a home.

Here are some tips on saving money on Chicago apartments.

Before you begin your fun search for the perfect apartment, you want to start saving money. As soon as you’ve decided you want to move into an apartment is when you should start saving. It’s always recommended to put aside $50 to $100 from each paycheck until you’re ready to sign the lease.

Make sure you have money set aside for a down payment. Each rental is different and you’ll either need to make a deposit or pay first and last month’s rent when you sign the lease. Be prepared for either.

Before you move, keep in mind there’s a lot less space in an apartment than in a house. If there are things you don’t need, you can sell them. You will quickly make some extra money selling off things. If you don’t need it, don’t buy it. People like to spend money decorating their place, but they end up spending money on things you don’t need and won’t fit in your apartment. You’re downsizing so you won’t need as many things.

If you’re moving out for the first time, try and find items at rummage sales, the flea market and garage sales. Sometimes the down payment and upfront rent can consume the one you have saved up, but you still need furniture. You can even buy furniture from IKEA, which sells nice furniture at affordable prices.

Engineering is the mastery of design. Such mastery must be gained through careful study, and those seeking lessons can find them in Canada. Consider the country’s most impressive facilities to gain the necessary knowledge you need.

These colleges must be considered by those wishing to further their studies. Choosing the right one requires more than the need to excel, however. It instead demands research. Canada 411 can provide that. Use it to gain insight. Discover essential information, directions and references.

Waterloo Bound

Providing an innovative education, the University of Waterloo is among Canada’s premier institutions. It was established in 1957 (in the city it shares its name with) as a way to fulfill Ontario’s need for mathematics. It has since sprawled into a 1,000-acre campus and boasts over 30,000 students. It features the largest co-operative program in the world.

McGill Rewards

Tucked in Montreal is a collection of research facilities and academic pursuits. McGill University, founded in 1821, is one of Canada’s oldest organizations. It offers an intimate atmosphere, with its urban campus shaped to a mere 80 acres. The college consistently ranks as the countries finest and has earned recognition among the world for its engineering feats.

Alberta Advantage

Progress has forever defined education, and the University of Alberta was created from such progress. Constructed in 1906, this college mimicked the then-modern ideals of learning. It offered nondenominational admissions and applied research facilities and extension efforts. Since its construction, it has allowed its home of Edmonton to become a vital source of engineering and has emphasized biomedical and nanotechnology efforts.

Finding the right school is the best way to start a promising career in engineering.

Many people are now choosing to further their education through online learning in order to progress in the workplace and obtain higher-paying jobs. Many traditional universities are now offering full catalogues of courses that can be completed online, and there are also institutions that offer only online courses.

The first step to completing higher education online is to make sure the college or university is accredited. Without this certification, the degree earned may not be beneficial to the graduate. It is also important to do some research before signing up as to how much the whole process will cost, including tuition, books, and any other fees. The professors should have at least a master’s degree, plus plenty of experience to be able to properly teach and guide students in real world situations. Some schools will also offer assistance to their students to find jobs after graduation, so this may be an option worth having.

Many students will enter university with a major and minor already in mind, while some aren’t sure. When trying to decide, students can think about which courses have been enjoyable, and what major and job path those typically fall under. Internships can help students see which jobs are particularly fulfilling. Some majors and minors will require advanced degrees in order to work in these fields, which can add extra college stress and cost to the educational experience. Students should examine the fields to which each major can be applied when deciding which job. Higher education is a great way to receive opportunities for earning more money, as well as positions that allow for more growth and advancement in the long run.

An increasing amount of college students are deciding to pursue more than one academic major. Some are doing so to build their resumes to create a competitive edge in today’s rigorous marketplace and others prepare for careers in multi-disciplinary fields. When deciding to pursue more than one major, there are many important issues to consider.

Pros

Having multiple majors on a college transcript shows employers that the graduate is dedicated to hard work, which will reflect in their careers.

Students planning to pursue more than one major can still graduate within the normal amount of time because they can complete Advanced Placements courses in high school.

Multiple majors helps students pursue diverse interests especially those that are finding it difficult to just choose one area of focus.

Multiple majors allow an easier transition for future career changes.

Many jobs are becoming more multidisciplinary and requiring additional skills that more than one major can provide.

Cons

Pursuing more than major often requires additional time to graduate and increased tuition costs.

Some employers may view a student with multiple majors as an individual that has a hard time focusing on a particular area.

Since multiple majors take more time, students may not be able to pursue other important college experiences such as internships, leadership roles, volunteer opportunities, extracurricular activities, and study abroad experiences.

Some majors are on different ends of the spectrum and do not complement each other to add significant value.

Students who decide to select more than one academic major should access their career objectives and factors that are associated with multiple majors such as the need for multidisciplinary abilities, tuition costs, and time to graduate. Academic advisors, career-services staff members, professionals in the targeted profession, and other resources can assist students with making their decision.

Many educational professionals stress the importance of students selecting a minor in college and there are important academic, professional, and personal benefits of college minors.

Academic Importance

A minor may be significantly important for students who plan on applying to graduate school or other advanced academic activities. Minors can demonstrate that a student possesses additional interests and abilities in interrelated or completely separate areas.

Minors can also demonstrate who a student is as a person and related interests and academic goals. A minor will not guarantee or deny admission to advanced academic programs, but it can help students stand out among large amounts of applicants to competitive programs.

Professional Importance

From a professional standpoint, minors can provide assistance to students who need additional education for a certain career path such as supporting knowledge in a subfield. Students can also augment their resume by complete courses and gaining training in an area that potential employers will consistently have an interest in.

Students often choose minor to complement one area of academic training with another that will enable students to acquire theoretical and practical knowledge. For example, students pursuing a teaching degree choosing a minor in a specific subject to increase career prospects and demonstrate a solid understanding of the particular area.

Personal Importance

College minors may have important personal aspects to students if they choose to minor in an area that they are very interested in and have a passion for such as an aspiring medical student that has a deep love for playing the piano that chooses to minor in music.

Students may also decide to acquire training and skills in a specific field, but not be committed to pursuing the subject at an extensive major level.

Online learning services have developed since computers were first introduced to the education industry. There are various forms on online learning including classroom aides to complement lectures such as PowerPoint presentations, laptop programs, hybrid learning, and complete online learning.

As technology increases, more educational institutions are implementing combined learning services where computer-based activities are incorporated into classroom-based environments.

Types of Online Learning:

Computer-Based Learning (CBL): involves using computers as an important part of the learning environment.

The term is broadly used to define a structured learning atmosphere where computers are used for the purpose of instruction.

It also refers to the general use of computers in classrooms.

Computer-based training (CBT): involves learning activities that are self-paced and available through computers and handheld electronic devices.

CBT is generally used to teach unchanging processes such as mathematical equations or using software. CBT is typically delivered through CD-ROM and related software.

Evaluation of learning generally takes place in the form of multiple choice questions or other related methods that can be scored easily on a computer. Online software easily scores and records evaluations and delivers immediate feedback to users. Users can often print certificates that illustrate completion.

Web-based training (WBT) is a form of computer-based training that is delivered through the Internet using a web browser.

Computer-supported collaborative learning (CSCL) is a useful way to improve learning and teaching.

It used modern communication technology and enables students to interact with instructors and each other. Users are able to work together and use direct manipulation of information to facilitate learning.

This type of learning enables the virtual learning environment to invite multiple users to share information and promote active experiences among students and instructors.

Technology-enhanced learning (TEL) strives to provide socio-technical advances to improve the effectiveness and cost efficiency of e-learning methods.

It takes into account several factors include individual users, organizations, location, and pace of learning.

This type of learning applies to any of learning that incorporates technology.

Numerous students enrolled in college deal with many factors that contribute to stress. Increased stress in college can be a contributing factor to weight gain, anxiety, depression, and dropping out.

Common Stress Factors:

Academics: many new college students do not understand the magnitude of the amount of work college courses involve, which is significantly more difficult than the average workload in high school. College students also have less support from teachers and parents. Rigorous college courses may involve difficult tests, scheduling problems and various other academics barriers. College students often have to endure long and hard hours of studying which leads to lack of sleep and free time.

Social Experiences: college brings an array of social challenges including leaving a student’s complete support system and developing a new network of social contacts. Other social stressors include being away from home, decreased parental support, sharing living space with a roommate, and trying to balance social experiences and part-time jobs with schoolwork.

Miscellaneous Stressors: There are various other stressors that accompany college life including living independently, staying up late and getting up early, missing home, and deciding how to choose the right major of study. Most students have a hard time of who they want to become sometime during college.

Stress Results

Stress related to college life includes a variety of effects:

Feeling overwhelmed: this is one of the most common results of stress in college and many students struggle with trying to find a good balance of school work and social experiences.

Gaining or losing weight: many students unintentionally gain or lose weight during their first few years of college as they attempt to deal with stress and other practical and social problems.

Dropout: stress of college life contributes significantly to the high dropout rate among college students. According to the 2008 U.S. Census, approximately 50% of American college students who begin college do not graduate.

Higher learning is something that is desired by many individuals today. In fact, colleges are bursting at the seams with new student enrollments because people are realizing that it is never too late to return to college. This is especially true of people that are in a down economy. The Great Recession has been the closest to the Great Depression for many people of recent times, and that has created an urgency to return to school and to get educated in fields that will provide incomes to families. More than ever people are returning to trade schools and tech schools as many of these higher learning programs are faster to complete and tend to be in demand regardless of the economic downturn. The types of jobs that are affected are the higher echelon white collar corporate jobs that have bloated salaries.

For those that are pursuing higher learning degrees and certificates it should be applauded. There are many people that would not see the purpose and would continue to search for jobs in the same field that is shrinking and hoping that something works out. There is no shame in attending a tech school or a trade school to learn valuable skills that are both useful and marketable. When the economy improves then people can use the education that they received and couple that with the experience that they already have and be that much more marketable. This seems to be the trend that is happening and many people are looking forward to the time when they can capitalize on their skills and provide a company with an essential set of knowledge that is unique to that individual. This can only be accomplished through learning and taking the time to work through a hard economy.

Online majors are no different than traditional brick and mortar majors. The difference is that many of these schools offer pamphlets and brochures outlining the specific requirements for each of their programs. This is a necessary tool as many schools are only offered on a visual basis. These schools are focusing on a customer service type of presentation, and for students, this is a great benefit. In declaring majors for online schools, this is something that is done from the very beginning. It is vital that a prospective student truly understand and comprehend what it is that they want to do, otherwise there could be a lot of time and money that is wasted on changing majors as the requirements for many of the degree programs are different for each. This is the one drawback of many online schools as they make their programs very concise and specific, so there is little room for error and little margin for changing minds.

There are many majors to choose from, and the difference with online schools to that of brick and mortar schools is that they will not allow you to dual major. This is because the course work is provided in a different format, and there is a fear that many students will not be able to handle the load. This is a legitimate concern, and many schools pride themselves on their high rates of success and completion. If a dual major was considered, many students would not be able to handle the load and would therefore have to drop part of their program. This would reflect poorly on the school and then in turn tarnish their success and completion statistics. Be sure to investigate the options before choosing a degree program, and once decided you need to make sure you complete the program as prescribed.

If you are a college student or a recent graduate, there are a number of considerations that you are going to want to make when it comes to your taxes. The right tips are going to come in handy when it comes to preparing you for filing your taxes as well as using your tax refund wisely.

The following are some tax tips that are going to come in handy if you happen to be a recent graduate from college or a brand new college student looking to stay afloat. Because you likely only have a college job, you are probably going to fall into a lower tax bracket, and this is going to have an impact on how much money you get back. You are also going to want to pay attention to whether your parents are listing you as a dependent, as you do not file in the same way if someone else is claiming you. Also, filing your taxes as a student is different than filing if you are a full-time employee, especially when you consider education deductions and credits.

Students that are parents, students that have student loans, and students with other types of special considerations are not going to file their taxes in the same manner. As you can see, there are many important factors to consider when you are filling out your taxes for the year. Make sure that you are considering all of these different variables when you decide to file your taxes so that you get the biggest possible refund back. You do not want to end up owing for anything that you should not owe. A little bit of planning and forethought can really go a long way in ensuring that you get the best possible refund for your efforts.

Finding a major for a degree choice can be a hard decision to make. For many students they are still in the stage of being unsure about what they want to be when they grow up. For those that have found themselves in this situation, there is no fear, as you are able to declare your major in your junior year of study. For others that are ready to declare here are some tips that you can use when confirming your declaration. First, research your choice. Make sure that you really want to do this profession and that it is something you could see yourself enjoying for the span of your working career. This is an important step as many realize when it is too late that they do not like their career path, and they find themselves returning to school to redo their education. This is a tough road to follow as it can be costly and prove to be something that may not be entirely feasible to do.

The other suggestions would be to investigate the profession by looking at burnout rates, length of average employment, turnover rates, and other such factors that could have a bearing on your decision to remain in that field. The final step would be to investigate the course work that is required for that particular field. You may find that the course work is something that you could spring board off of later, and that it would prove beneficial in other areas, this could lead to graduate work, and potentially open up other career paths. The caution to have when looking at the coursework is that you may find that some of the courses cost more than others, and that the demands may be higher. This is especially true if something requires labs or observations. Ensuring that you have the time to finish these requirements could have some bearing on your choice of major.

When choosing a major it is important to seek out the specific details of that major so that you are aware of what you are getting into. Many students get excited about a particular field of study, then realize that once they are in the program, they really do not like it, or are surprised by what is involved with the program. This can be stressful, and expensive as many students have prepared for one program, find that they do not like it, and have to start over in some cases with their pre-requisites. Do not be like so many that simply look at the pictures or brochures and then feel like all their questions have been asked. This is a painfully long step to have to correct for many.

The best thing that can be done when investigating a new field of study is to research. Take the time to see if this is something you would like to do, or have in your life. Then, interview people who are already in that area of study, or find basic entry level employment. This will give you a first hand look on whether or not you could do this job, or be in this particular profession, for years to come. This will also get you a step in the right direction if you do like the field because you will begin to make long lasting and beneficial connections that could prove to be very helpful later on during your career.

The other thing to investigate is looking into other careers that might be of interest. It is good to rule out any other options before settling on one because you will feel more confident with your decision, and have less doubt when you complete your program. There is nothing worse than leaving a four year school and wondering “what if?” Make sure that you look into all of your options, meet with academic counselors, and take the time to figure out what is best for you.

As we ring in the New Year, many people start thinking of ways to improve themselves. Sure, finals are over and you enjoyed your break but for many, this is just a passing thought. A reminder that last year is over. Regardless, the New Year is a time for self reflection and personal development.

If you are going to school and ending your pre graduate years soon, you may want to focus a little more. If you have to take a test to get into a school for your post graduate education, a GMAT test, for example, you may want to look into something like a GMAT prep course. Sure, this may not feel like the right time to get ready for it, but that is also what everyone else is thinking, as well. If you start looking into the prep courses and start getting ready for your testing at this time of year, you may end up being in a smaller class, which can mean that you get more attention and therefore better results.

Most people don’t like testing, and adding in more studying around the end of the semester may seem like suicide. But, if you plan well, you can study a little at a time for your test. Taking the prep course does not need to mean that you will take the test immediately. Even more than that, looking into what prep classes are available does not mean that you have to take the class right now. Knowing what is available, and getting ready for it, is always a good idea. Especially when you are planning to go into a field like business management. Show that you are prepared by doing your research and finding the perfect GMAT prep course.

College Minors are an aspect of a degree that can be very helpful for students, without tasking too much like a dual major. This mean that a student can choose specific classes that are already part of their Bachelors program, without adding more classes, and be able to obtain a minor in a specific subject. The purpose of a minor is to simply add to the validity of the major, and this lends credibility to your abilities as a degree holder. This also help you to obtain a more diverse employment field as you can claim that you are not only well versed in your major, but that you have a minor in another area as well. For teaching this can equal a dual credential for teaching. For instance, if a student attends college for elementary education, and during the course of his or her education chooses to take history classes as a way of sufficing for liberal arts classes. That student would graduate with a degree in Elementary Education, and a minor in History or Social Science. If the unit amount for the minor is enough, in most states it is 30 units, then that student would qualify for a secondary license in history to teach.

This is a very cost effective and time considerate approach if a student does not have the energy or resources to accomplish a dual major. The main goal of obtaining a minor is that it does not add any units to the degree as it stands, and will allow a student to claim a more rounded eligibility for work. Because there are no more units being added to the degree, there are not additional costs. Like the example above, students are allowed to choose some of their classes, and in doing so they have the possibility of claiming a minor with no additional time added. An academic counselor can assist with the process as well.

Consolidating debts is an important process for many people to help control the amount of money they have going out each month to pay bills. This is also very true of college students. Student loans can be quite costly every month, especially if they are not consolidated. Student loans are paid out individually each semester or quarter, so it can be easy to have 10, 12, or more student loans by the time a student graduates college. Each of these loans is accruing interest and that can mean thousands of extra dollars that are paid over the life of the loan.

Consolidating those loans will make them one big loan, which means only one loan is accruing interest. This can even lower the overall interest rate on the new loan by locking in during a low time. Today’s interest rates are currently very low, so students have a good opportunity to consolidate and save. This takes the sting out of repaying student loans.

However, when it comes to student loans, they can only be consolidated once in a lifetime. A student will not be able to consolidate more loans into a consolidated bundle. It is wise for students to research their options for this process.

Once loans are consolidated, students still have options for payment, especially during hardships. There are options like forbearance and deferment, both of which are intended to ease the sting of high payments when times get tough. Forbearance allows students to pay at a lower rate for up to three years, and deferment will allow students to forgo payments for up to three years. The two options can be done multiple times, however, once the 36-month mark is reached, there is no longer eligibility for these hardship plans, so it is wise to use them well.

Masters degrees are a common higher education goal that many find help aid them in their career advancement. What many people do not realize, however, is that unlike a Bachelors degree, the specification of the degree itself can be very concise. For instance, you are a mechanical engineer, and you have a Bachelors of Science in Engineering, that would cover all aspects of mechanical engineering, the details for planning, and even cost analysis. For those that would like to obtain a Masters of Science in this field they would be looking for a more specific area like Master of Science in Engineering Project Management, or even Consultation. This would be written on a resume as M.S. but when asked, as person would have to include the specificity of the degree.

There are also different requirements for those that are seeking higher level degrees such as a Masters degree. For one, a person must already have a Bachelors degree that is related somehow. For instance, if a person has an education degree, they must take extra classes in order to be eligible for an Engineering Masters degree. The course load is much different than that of a Bachelors degree program as well. The graduate work is much more concise and concentrated as it is expected that most of the foundational work has been completed during the Bachelors degree process. Also, there is a final project due at the end of a Masters program. A Thesis is required at the completion of a Masters program, in order to validate that the individual has successfully mastered the topic at hand, and can therefore be verified as a Masters recipient. The Thesis is usually about 50 pages of research, and is usually completed over the course of a couple of years. The research is completed through the help of mentors, and the final project is evaluated for acceptance by the issuing university.

The expanding field of criminal justice contains a variety of areas offering varied choices within its circle. Those who decide to study this field find many options open to delve into. From opportunities in local law enforcement to private security, criminal justice is a profession on the rise.

The desire to uphold the law and protect others is one of the main reasons why most people are attracted to a career in this industry. Graduates of a Bachelor of Science program can garner an annual salary of up to $70,000. Future police officers gain the necessary foundation for a successful law enforcement career. Other areas for job opportunities include Homeland Security, Forensic Investigation, Immigration and Naturalization Services, and various employment in the Court System.

Students embarking into obtaining a criminal justice degree gain proper knowledge on the workings of law enforcement, the justice system, crime theory, juvenile justice and more. The goal of any criminal justice program is to provide each graduate with the tools to understand and work within public policy. Students are driven by a desire to do what is right by society and their community.

If protecting others and a need for doing the right thing drives you, this degree choice could give you what you are looking for in a career. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts a positive ongoing growth in this field. The popularity of this burgeoning degree program as a major of choice for new students is on the incline, even amidst a challenging economy. Increasing interest in the criminal justice field is evident by the fact that a variety of online programs are available. So no matter how a potential student’s daily schedule may appear, there is a program out there to fit their needs and earn a criminal justice degree online. Your desire to protect the innocent and uphold what is right is not only noble, but within your reach.

One of the most interesting part of a student’s college career are the electives they can choose to take. Many people believe that college electives are little more that a waste of time and money. For students who opt to carefully choose their electives, a few hours and class each week literally change their lives. Electives are no longer about bowling and home economics. Instead, students have access to a wide range of classes that can change them by providing them with useful information and skills.

Unfortunately, these same ‘good’ electives can mean spending a bit more time than most students believe the standard elective class should take. Still, there are some electives that are worth a little bit of extra time and effort.

Public Speaking: very few people are born with a natural ability to speak in public. Like anything it is a skill that must be learned. This class is the perfect place to start.

Business writing: You would be surprised just how much writing goes into running a business. This elective will prepare you to write everything from your first resume to the business plan that will get your new business off the ground.

English Grammar: It is actually stunning how many college students have bad grammar skills. I might not be the most exciting class you can take, but it certainly one that will provide you with much needed skills.

Art: It is a shame how many students think art is a waste of time. The truth is, art class can help a student better understand everything from history to literature.

Foreign Language: The world isn’t’ getting any bigger – it’s getting smaller and a foreign language is one skill that everyone can use.

You see? Electives can be very useful

As a high school student you may be wondering if higher education is truly important. It probably seems like higher education is simply a lot of time and money spent getting a degree that may or may not be useful. Many people believe that simply jumping into the job market is the way to go. While in some cases it may be true that experience is what gives an employee the edge the job market in most cases a higher education degree is critical for success.

In most cases jobs that do not require a degree from college or more manual in nature. This is not to say that people without college degrees cannot be successful. In fact some manual labor jobs can net the employee a high salary and even good job security.

For those uninterested in manual labor or those interested in a career path as opposed to a job they simply must invest in higher education. The time and money spent obtaining a bachelor’s degree or even an associate’s degree is well worth it. In fact, on average those who invest in college education and received a bachelor’s degree begin their careers making an average of $20,000 more per year than those who didn’t spend the time getting a degree.

So yeah, higher education is necessary. People who are struggling with time for financial issues are encouraged to find unique solutions that will allow them to begin working on a degree. Today’s students have access to classes online, weekend classes and evening classes. By beginning to learn a higher education degree in a community college it is possible to save a great deal of money.

It comes down to drive and ambition. Those that haven’t understand how or higher education can be. Those that don’t may very well be satisfied with just a job.

As a new college student one of the biggest decisions you can make is what courses you should take. Obviously this decision impacts the future of your college career and even your job prospects. Because of this it is vital that college students take the time to understand which courses they need, which courses come first and which courses to skip.

Course selection often begins with declaring a major. Obviously this will greatly impact which courses to take and the order in which you take them. Students who declared a major can consult with a guidance counselor or college guidelines to determine which classes to take. Students who declared majors have it easiest. Their course selection is laid out for them.

It’s the students who are undetermined in their future that must spend the most time considering which classes they would like to take. Many spend their freshmen and sophomore year taking what are affectionately known as weeder classes. These are basic courses in subjects such as English, history, math and science. These are also the classes which typically take place in large auditoriums or lecture halls. As many as 200 students can take a weeder class at one time.

For students looking for a major or a possible career field one option of course selection is auditing classes. This is a typically free method of taking classes and can help students determine where there interests lie. The problem with auditing classes is that students typically do receive full college credit for them.

Students also have to carefully consider how many courses they can reasonably expect to handle each semester. This can help them determine an overall path for their college career.

Course selection is one of the most important decisions a college student can make and it as one that students should carefully consider at the beginning of their college career.

It wasn’t too long ago that students had only two options for continuing their education. The first was a traditional university education. This route was often very expensive and only available to the wealthiest of students. The second option was distance learning. This option was flawed as well, giving students access to a limited number of classes and not addressing the need for a degree at all. Today’s students have access to a much greater range of learning resources than ever before.

Students who are interested in a college education now have a wide variety of options available to them. The first is, of course, a traditional college education. Students with the grades, finances and interest can leave high school and enter into a four year university to continue their education. Students concerned about finances have an additional option of attending a community college first. This learning resource is a great way to start your college education without the worry of expensive tuition or rooming fees.

Students who opted not to attend college after high school used to be in a bind. Completing a college education while working full time was often a 10 year process. Today’s students have access to a unique learning resource, online classes. Online classes are the perfect solution for those looking for flexibility during higher education.

For those looking for that added flexibility but who still wish to attend traditional classes, many colleges offer an additional learning resource –weekend classes. This allows students to attend classes, often for a full day, on Saturday or in the evenings during the week. It’s a great solution to this problem.

The number and variety of learning resources available to students interested in a college education means there’s simply no reason not complete a degree. Simply decide which course method works best for you and your schedule.

Many students don’t like history. They find the subject matter boring, despise the apparent amount of memorization and fail to understand how learning about history can impact their lives. The truth is almost everyone is required to take at least one history class. Many degrees require more. Understanding the importance of history in our world and learning to look at it as a series of stories can make taking the classes more palatable.

When reviewing the courses available to students interested in taking history it is important to realize a few facts. The first is that most college degrees require at least one generalized history class. These are classes such as world history, American history or European history. These classes cover thousands of years of history during a semester. They are designed to presents a general overview of history to the student and focus primarily on major events such as wars, revolutions and technological advances. These overview classes are the simplest type of history course.

Students interested in pursuing a degree in history, philosophy, politics or any number of other higher degrees may be required to take more advanced history courses. These history courses focus on a specific period of history such as the American Revolution or the Russian Revolution, a specific group of people or even an ideology such as communism or socialism. Students spend the course of a semester learning intricate details of the specific events or ideas. These courses are obviously more difficult than the generalized classes.

History may be easier to take if a student can consider that history is nothing more than a series of stories. These are the stories that have defined who we are, our place in the world and even where we’re headed. Instead of considering history as a series of dates and names to be memorized students are encouraged to focus on the story.

In America everyone takes English classes. It’s just the fact of life and actually a necessary one. Just because we speak English as a native language, it doesn’t mean we understand and grasp the fine nuances of grammar, language and the written word. It is for this reason that all college students are required to take some English classes. Students are encouraged to get over it, sign up and do the work.

Most college students are required to take a composition class. Many are required to take two. These classes are designed to strengthen a student’s written language skills. Typically students are required to learn the various forms of written word as they apply to the college setting. This typically includes essays, reports, data analysis and research. Besides being necessary part of a college degree English composition is a helpful course that can help a student prepare for more difficult classes during their college education.

A basic course review of English classes will show that colleges offer many more classes than simple composition. Students are able to determine which classes they would like to take depending on their interests and degree requirements. Some examples include grammar, advanced composition, research and writing and even speech. All of these classes can be helpful.

There is another form of English classes available to students as well, the literature classes. Like many subjects literature classes very in types. For example, students may take a general overview of world literature or a specific class covering American short stories. These classes are useful for those interested in literature for analysis and writing of literature related papers.

Students are encouraged to remember that English is a language of nuances, grammar skills are difficult to remember and our literature is moving and beautiful. Taking required or extra English classes can only benefit the student.

There’s no way around it, college is stressful. This is especially true for students in their first year or those taking advanced courses. Stress comes for a variety of sources including class work, finances, work and even fun. As hard as it may be to understand, every part of college, even the fun parts, can wreak havoc on even the most dedicated of students. Understanding what causes college stress and learning some helpful techniques can help students ensure a successful college career.

First you have to realize it’s all about planning. Part of the student’s responsibility at the college level is adequately planning for class preparation, homework, projects and exams. Learning to develop a schedule that is flexible enough to include all aspects of course work as well as personal time is a skill every student must develop. It is also a hard skill. Some students find a day planner works well while others rely on technology such as a BlackBerry or computer scheduling program. Regardless, don’t forget to plan fun time as well.

Finance can also play a big role in college stress levels. Students can adequately combat this by planning their finances in advance. This may mean applying for student loans, getting a part time job or developing a budget. Only by planning financial issues in advance can a student hope to avoid stress caused by finances.

Many college students also find course work itself stressful. With homework that often includes hundreds of pages of reading material, lab work and preparing for tests and exams it’s no wonder that students find their courses stressful. Students should remember that college is difficult and that there is help available for those who need to ask for it.

The truth is you can’t avoid stress that college what you can do is managing it.

Choosing the best online school can be difficult. Because you know the wrong choice can cost you in both time and money, you want to get it right the first time! Let’s take a look at a few good ways to make your decision:

Ask Others

Just like choosing a traditional college, asking current students or graduates about their experiences can give you the best information. Ask them if the classes were useful, if the online system was reliable, and how the testing process worked.

Talk About it with Your Parents

Although you think your parents don’t know anything, they actually know a lot! Tell them about your plans. They may be able to offer advice about which degrees are in demand, and they may even know someone in the business or professional community who attended an online college.

Budget Your Time and Money

While you’re searching for an online school, find out how much time will be involved and the tuition rates. If you’re working your way through school, this is important information to know. You may have to save up to afford the program you’re interested in, and carefully watch your time once you enroll. It can mean that you have to work less so that you can study more! While you’re at it, remember that all degree programs won’t pay off in the same way. A high-tech degree, for example, generally delivers a higher-paying job than a History degree. While you want to enjoy your program, keep your ultimate goal in mind!

Use Online Sites for Easy Research

To make your research efforts as easy as possible, use online sites line earnmydegree.com. They can help you find a program for the degree you’re looking for in the shortest amount of time. You can also trust in the information you find there because they’ve already checked out each school’s qualifications.

Before making your final choice, examine every aspect of an online education.

We often hear of students having trouble in college. In some cases the students are simply not prepared for the work. In others the students simply party too much making success an impossibility. What you don’t often think of is how many students fail simply because they do not attend class. It is a sad fact that many college students, especially freshmen, do not have the coping skills, responsibility or simple drive to get up every day and go to class.

It isn’t like high school where the teacher takes attendance each day and calls mommy or daddy when you don’t show up. Instead college students are expected to be responsible enough to monitor their own attendance. The truth is every college student has the ability to go to class every day but often they choose not to. The question becomes why attendance so difficult?

But think about the average college freshman. It is their first time away from home. Their first taste of true freedom. Their first educational experience that isn’t guided by a parent. In today’s society where most children feel entitled to everything it should come as no surprise that many do not have the ability to manage their college attendance on their own.

It is for this reason that college students should carefully consider their schedule for their freshmen year. By remembering the novelty of being away from home, the excitement of college parties in the extraordinary amount of time kids can spend sleeping it’s easy to understand why seven AM classes are not a great option. Instead students are encouraged to build a schedule that is challenging and reasonable while not forcing them to start their day when the rooster crows.

It is your responsibility to attend every class, lab and required session. No more excuses –it’s time for class!

We all know how popular online classes are. Many students, even those who live on campus, take at least one online class during their college career. What many students do not realize is that the computer and the Internet is one of the greatest resources they have to ensure their college success. Understanding what help is available online in general and at your college in particular will give you access to more help than you could imagine.

More and more colleges are expanding their online resources in order to more adequately serve their students. It is important to take some time during orientation to review the resources available to you online. Many colleges offer mentoring or tutoring online particularly for students taking English classes. Other subjects are covered as well. Some colleges have textbooks or library resources online for help as well. Carefully review online help resources your college offers.

Some students opt to look outside of their college or university for online learning help. Websites are available to assist students with many of their college courses including English, history, math and science. These often come in the form of forums in which students can ask an answer questions. There are also formal online tutoring resources available.

Many professors also offer their lectures or lecture notes online. Students have the ability to access these notes for further review and to ensure that they have adequately grasped the lecture. Some professors utilize online learning resources for other purposes as well. They may upload slide shows or other graphics for student review.

The point is there’s tons of help available online if a student simply knows where to look. It’s one of those newfangled responsibilities college students have. Knowing when to ask for help, as well as where to ask for help, is the mark of a truly responsible student.

As students we all dread the words “group project.” The phrase brings to mind frustrating hours spent divvying up assignments, checking up on classmates and generally feeling like everything is on your own shoulders. Professors don’t create group projects to be mean. Group projects, sometimes called collaborative projects, are actually very beneficial to students. It isn’t even so much about the project itself or the subject matter to be learned; instead collaborative projects are used as a tool to teach students about sharing responsibilities, project management, work ethics and much more.

That probably sounds like a bunch of mumble jumble to almost every student out there. Even understanding these benefits many students probably still dread the group project. Students who are able to look at the concept from the teacher’s perspective might enjoy them a bit more. If that doesn’t work concentrate on how much less work will be your responsibility.

One of the biggest benefits is, of course, and learning to work well with others. While it is true that that is a lesson that should’ve been learned in kindergarten a college refresher course is never a bad idea. Students who are forced to work on collaborative projects are encouraged to develop skills that will allow them to successfully complete the project without trying to kill their classmates.

Collaborative projects are beneficial in one other pretty big way: they save time. Of course this is only true for students that are willing to release some of the control over the project as a whole. Students must be willing to allow their peers to complete their own portion of the project. In other words, do your own work, leave their collaborators alone to finish their own work into then focus on the finished product.

It is in a monster under your bed it’s simply a group project.

We all know we need a college degree if we want to get anywhere in the world. More and more jobs require a college degree. Because of this more and more students are opting to continue their education. Higher education is becoming more than a goal for high school students. It is becoming a necessity. Understanding what is necessary to be accepted into in a higher education institution can take some of the stress out of this process.

There are a lot generalized guidelines about what colleges and universities require from their applicants. These run the gamete from grades to extracurricular activities and the only way to be sure that you qualify as to carefully review the application and the requirements stated within it. In fact students who have a particular college in mind should meet with a guidance counselor in order to fully understand the specific requirements for that institution.

That being said there are couple of pretty standard guidelines about getting into a higher education institution. Almost every college and university has a minimum grade point average for their applicants. Another common requirement is a score that passes the bare minimum requirement on the SAT or ACT. Both of these factors vary by school but almost every school requires them.

It gets a little bit interesting at this point. Colleges and universities may require their students to have extensive extracurricular activities, volunteer projects, special skills or other unique requirements in order to be accepted. Others require students to submit a lengthy essay on why higher education is important to them. It really depends on the school.

Any student who hopes to attend a higher education institution needs to be prepared to not simply complete an application but to meet or exceed every requirement and guideline set forth by the institution

Every college student declares a major. It is this course of study that will become their focus. Their classes and curriculum will revolve around that major. While it is true that not every college major offers a minor in the same field, many students opt to declare a minor as well. There are literally hundreds of minors available for students to choose from. It is not uncommon for a student to choose two or more minors to declare. Understanding the reasoning behind minors and how they impact your life after college may help you decide which minor is appropriate for you.

A minor is selected for one of several reasons. The student may select a minor that is a compliment to their major. For example, a student who has select history as their major may select geography as their minor. Students who select their minor as a compliment to their major typically do so to make their overall college degree more marketable to prospective employers.

Another option for minors is students hoping to add a skill or talent to their resume. Learning a foreign language, minoring in computer science or learning some other valuable skill can help a student find an attractive job after graduation.

Other students select minors that represent their interests. A student with a love of music may understand that they cannot hope to make a living in the music industry but still wish to have music in their life. A minor in music is often the best solution for people in this situation.

Students who opt to declare a minor can expect to devote about half as much time as their major. Most minor requirements are about ½ the credits of a major. Minors do have specific classes that must be taken but can be a great way to round out your education.

There was once a time when only the children of the richest and most powerful families could afford to attempt to get their degree. For those privileged few, an education merely meant that they could hold snooty conversations with the other elites, and run their family businesses with a strong network of other elites. However, for the young high school graduate in this day and age, a degree is far more attainable. It also means different things to this class of individuals than to the aristocrats of the past. There are also plenty of other options for a young person these days, since the field is more open for the laureates of online degrees than for those who have only a high school diploma under their belts.

Simply put, a high school diploma simply is not enough to get many kinds of lucrative jobs. While most people would prefer not to talk about college as just job training, that is a major portion of it. For people who are wanting to emerge from poverty, or for those who come from (and want to maintain) middle class status, a degree is often essential to securing the kind of income that one needs, in order to accomplish these sorts of goals. While there was a point in time when the costs of getting a degree were prohibitive to these less privileged types, the online degree has opened up all new opportunities for them.

Online degrees are pretty much the best thing that has ever happened to college students. Not only can you stay at home and very cheaply attend your virtual classes (as opposed to living in campus housing). Not only can you do your class work on your own schedule, and proceed at your own pace (as opposed to being alternately bored and overworked in a real world classroom setting). All of this is also at a lower price per credit hour than real world college.

So you have graduated from high school. You know all the reasons why you should go on to college, but you aren’t ready. Maybe you don’t like the idea of a four year university and the dorm living. Maybe your grades aren’t quite good enough to get into the school you want to. Maybe you just want a break. Unfortunately in today’s world, you need a college degree in order to be successful. Finding higher education options that fit better into your life may be just the answer you are looking for.

Community colleges are a great option for those that are short on cash, not ready for the four year experience or simply want a slower pace. Most community colleges have agreements with four year institutions, meaning that the classes you take at the community level will be applicable at a four year university. This is a great way to get your feet wet.

Other students have the travel bug, making it all the more difficult to buckle down in college. A great higher education alternative is studying abroad. While this option may be a bit more expensive, studying abroad exposes the student to foreign cultures, introduces them to new languages and can help create an appreciation for history. If you cannot afford to simply study abroad, find a college or university that has a foreign studies program and go in your third year.

Taking a year off is also an alternative to higher education – but it isn’t always the best idea. Many students who take a year off find themselves never actually taking that step. Instead, look into interning for a year and take a class at the local community college to keep those brain cells working.

College isn’t for everyone, but those who choose it generally earn more money. If you aren’t ready yet consider one of the many higher education options.

After four long years of high school, a lot of graduates have next to no desire to sign up for four more years. College often comes down to a single question: what sort of future do you want? There are several really good reasons to go to college, so if you think you can handle four more years, you just might want to sign up.

College does more that provide a student with valuable skill and information. What it does do is expand your ability to think and develop your problem solving skills. Advanced English classes teach students to write clearly and to improve their speech. College fosters a greater understand of the global community.

All that sounds great, but what does college really do for a student, other than the obvious education benefits? College expands a student’s opportunities. Whether we like it or not, job applicants who have a four year degree are more likely to be selected for a position. Even more important, individuals with four year degrees on average earn more money that those who opted out of college. This difference can be as much as $20,000.00 per year different. So yes, a college education can impact your life.

Students are encouraged to remember that college is a possibility for everyone. Those who have decided to attend college but cannot immediately afford it should consider their options. Starting at a two year community college is an excellent way to save money. Most two and four year institutions have financial add councilors who can assist you with determining eligibility for grants and scholarships. College is possible – even if it takes a little bit longer to get it done.

Attending college after high school is one of the best investments you can make in your future. Don’t be afraid to give it a try – you can do it!

The world is defined to silence, to the refusals of confessions. You admit none of your worries. You offer none of your fears. Instead you tuck them all away, certain that they will disappear if never voiced, that they will lose all relevancy. Stress is to be conquered alone, you believe. You can’t burden your friends and family with such little complications. They have their own lives to consider — and they don’t need you cluttering up their moments with your college concerns.

And so you face all of your problems without assistance. That’s assumed to be the only solution. But, when it fails to offer any relief, you are baffled. The stress hasn’t been eased. It’s instead only grown; and you don’t know what to do.

The answer is simple: you must seek help.

Pursuing higher education is a lofty goal. Your desire to increase your knowledge and improve your abilities is one that shouldn’t be denied. But this is not a simple affair — the expected satisfactions and lazy classes. It is instead an experience that can cause strong feelings of anxiety, depression and anger. It can overwhelm all individuals, leaving them unable to cope with the transition from children to adults.

They do not speak of this panic, however. They choose instead to hide it, certain that others should never hear of it: if only because pity would be just as great a burden as stress.

But it will not be pity that is offered from your friends and family. It will instead be relief. When a mind is filled to worry, it cannot function as it must. All thoughts will be shaped to stress and all efforts will become considerably more challenging. You must express these problems to others, allowing them to provide the support (and advice) you need. Do not try to combat this on your own. The results will not be satisfying.

Seek help. Gain encouragement. Ease the pain.

You are brilliant — but no one ever seems to know. You are inventive — but no one ever seems to care. Knowledge is obtained easily by you, understood for all of its facets and rules. There is never a way to prove this, however. Because you can’t find the courage to offer insights. Conversation eludes you; confidence does not exist. You’re crippled by a low esteem and a too grand fear of failure. Classrooms become terrors therefore, with you hiding in the corner and praying you won’t be noticed. You can’t offer the necessary facts. You can’t even make a sound.

It is wise therefore to consider pursuing your education in an environment that you better understand — your home.

Traditional campuses are not for everyone. Some students simply cannot flourish among the crowds, are overwhelmed by strangers rather than assignments. They become intimidated by even the most basic of chats, and expressing opinions in class is an impossible task for them.

It wouldn’t be, however, if those opinions could be given virtually.

Online learning is an alternative way to earn an education. For most it is thought to be used to bridge distances, to allow those too faraway from a campus to still indulge in lectures. But it has another purpose and one that could prove invaluable for individuals lacking in certainty. By choosing to continue schooling online, these students will not feel the typical pressures of a classroom. They will instead be settled at home, comforted by their surroundings. And offering their thoughts will demand only a keyboard.

This is vital — allowing even the most shy students to finally find their voices, simply because they don’t have to actually speak. The distinction will inspire interaction; and emails and message boards will host the many revelations.

Online learning is a new way to offer knowledge. And those seeking to prove themselves will be content with what they can find on a screen.

The days can’t be conquered. The nights must be ignored. You sit in the silence of your dorm, refusing to abandon your bed, hiding beneath the sheets. The silence is deafening but you lack the energy to speak — and the words would surely be sad, you know. They would be as exhausted as you are.

A college life has not been the expected ease. There has been no relief. There has been no comfort. You have instead become overwhelmed by the constant obligations, the unrelenting assignments and demands. You hate your professors; you hate your courses; you hate… yourself. No happiness can be found, just the terrible tedium.

And you think you may be depressed. You simply can’t summon the desire to seek treatment for it.

Students entering the first year of their education often assume that it will be ideal. They will earn their credits; they will gain friendships. The experience will be invaluable.

The truth, however, proves to be a far less appealing thing: the hours are frantic and the duties are endless. Stress begins to build immediately — left ignored due to a simple lack of time. And eventually students begin to regret ever choosing to pursue an education.

They become depressed.

As of 2010 it is estimated that 52 percent of all young adults experience occasional bouts of anxiety — enough to effect their moods and grades. A staggering 13 percent, however, are plagued by more constant problems and have been formally diagnosed with a medical condition. And it is believed that (at least) 11 percent of all students have considered harming themselves. Suicide is an all too common thought.

The stress of a university can cause even the most balanced of individuals to suffer from depression. The inability to cope with the burdens of classes and competition leaves them unable to continue — and this concern must be recognized by all so it can properly be addressed and treated.

The night is endless, sprawled out before you with sad intentions — you must devote each hour to studying, trying to master information that you don’t even understand, trying to answer philosophic riddles. The efforts will be tedious and the rewards will be scarce (such facts can’t be applied beyond the borders of school, you believe. They will be forgotten as soon as a test is completed). You deserve a little slice of happiness therefore, a little taste of perfection. And pizza is ordered, shoved then into your mouth. It’s a burst of grease and hot flavors.

It’s also a source of stress.

The university lifestyle is one of immediacy — individuals struggle to balance classes, assignments and social connections. Every task must be performed quickly; every need must be given a fast reply. There can be no hesitation. There can only be impulses. And seeking food becomes a quest for the snacks and sugar soaked morsels, the caffeine saviors. Energy can be earned from these, as well as comfort. It’s the ideal solution for the less than ideal days.

But this assumption is incorrect. Food — when drenched in high doses of fructose syrup and saturated fats — provides no value. It instead sends your body crashing toward poor health: heightening cholesterol, lowering energy and leaving you susceptible to stress.

Individuals who rely on the aptly named junk foods will see their worries increased. They will not have the proper nutrients to maintain their levels of activity. Instead they will suffer from exhaustion, sickness and constant worry (if only because they must forever seek out more sugar to satisfy themselves, to gain even hints of clarity). This forms stress. And all students will find themselves consuming more and more food but receiving no benefits — only an excess of pounds.

All diets must instead be balanced, ensuring that health can be secured and energy can be renewed. Individuals must eat right to live well.

You are to be spectacular: this is the belief that was offered to you by your parents, enforced always by your teachers and peers. There is to be no challenge you cannot overcome. There is to be no skill you cannot master. Each day is to be proof of your perfection. You are to be the best. You are to be without equal. And college, you have been so often told, is to become your battleground — where you slay all pages and conquer all lessons, earning your degree by shattering your fellow students and their grades. You are to succeed while your opponents fail.

Such intentions are shown to be difficult, however, when you realize that so many others share them.

It is an age of competition: students are to strive for excellence. The platitudes of good and acceptable are no longer to be received. The desire is to stand above the rest — and this requires academic diligence and constant studying. All are to devote themselves to receiving a degree and the title of valedictorian.

But such competition is not the value so many parents have branded it to be. It is instead causing an epidemic of stress and panic.

Individuals entering college will be forced to work hard and play little. And the combination of perpetual worry and endless studying will take a heavy toll. As of 2010 85 percent of all first year students admitted to experiencing stress on a daily basis. 77 percent of these individuals listed academic pressures as their main concern. They want only to do their very best — and the fear of failure has branded them forever frustrated. And, sadly, 33 percent of all students confessed to being completely overwhelmed, with suicidal thoughts entering their minds.

There is no fault to find in wishing to do well. There is only fault to find, however, in linking self worth with academics. Students must be encouraged, not forced.

It’s a stack of books and journals, the crumpled towers of notes — they’re placed along a bed, unable to fit on the desk in the corner (it’s been claimed by theories and dissertations). All sheets are covered with pages. All pillows cradle research. And you wonder when it became essential to use your mattress as a work station, rather than for sleep. But such thoughts can’t be entertained for long. There is much to study and much to prove. You have classes in the morning and assignments that are waiting still to be completed. A bed won’t be necessary, you know. There will be no dreams tonight.

The desire to succeed is shared by all college students. Such desire can prove to be problematic, however, when it leads those same students to ignore the need for sleep. It is estimated the 66 percent of all young adults occasionally indulge in 24 hour days, scrambling to finish their work and refusing to rest. Of those individuals 20 percent admitted to forgoing sleep more than once a week — trying to keep pace with their semester demands.

This is a startling truth that should not be allowed. When students are worried about their academic success, they become stressed; and dreaming is considered a waste of time and precious studying. They work hard but offer themselves no relief. And their bodies begin to suffer the strains of exhaustion. When this occurs, energy can be lost and thoughts can become lazy — causing grades to immediately suffer and the stress to intensify. The cycle continues.

It’s essential that all students receive (at least) seven hours of consecutive sleep a day. This is a demand for more than infrequent naps and sporadic resting. It’s instead an assurance that bodies can rejuvenate. Refusing to dream will cause a terrible effect on health and the mind. And stress will only continue when not offered a reprieve.

Sleep and earn a reward.

It’s a trust in pages, a belief in books: college is to be shaped to lessons. All days are to be tributes to learning, with knowledge found in every instant. The intention is to gain a degree. The desire is to earn success for the future. And all other elements of schooling — the parties and friendly teases — are to be ignored.

This is your certainty.

You will not waste your time with relationships. Those are deemed mere distractions, will surely steal your focus from your work. An education is to be pursued without hesitation; and the dull chats will only keep you from you goals.

But college is meant to be more than a collection of facts and figures. It is instead to provide you with the interpersonal skills to succeed — and relationships, you will discover, are a vital part of the experience.

The advantages of higher education are well charted (and you have already considered almost all of them, have embraced the value of books). But often students forget the importance of crafting friendships, greeting the wealth of customs and ideas. By attending college they can be exposed to people who offer few commonalities — and this is vital in ensuring tolerance for the future.

Interpersonal skills are necessary to master the world. Businesses are defined by countless individuals. There are infinite opinions and differences to find. Working within these environments demands more than simple knowledge therefore. It instead requires an understanding of people. And a university can provide that.

You must be willing to interact with others. Gain the ability to speak with those who are nothing like yourself. Forge connections with everyone you meet. The intention is not to dedicate yourself to frivolous parties. It is instead to learn how to co-exist with people, even ones you may not fully understand.

This ability is necessary to do well in business and college provides an easy opportunity to obtain it.

You sit in the confines of a waiting room, battling for space on a sofa. Others are hunched beside you, glancing again at their resumes, reciting their greetings. You remain quiet, however. There is no need for nervousness. There is no concern for failing. This position is yours, you believe. You merely need to stroll in and obtain it.

But, as you peek around to the applicants around you, you begin to notice an unfortunate commonality: their histories are filled to higher education, the college rewards. They have earned degrees and internships. You… have not. Those were never considered worthy. Your common sense and easy talent was enough to meet your goals, you assumed. Nothing else was needed.

You begin to think that may have been a mistake.

The pursuit of higher education is often deemed futile. Individuals are certain in their own skills, refuse to devote time and dollars to knowledge they think they don’t need. They can create their success through simple persistence.

This philosophy — while admirable — is not always proven true, however. Statistics instead favor those with college experience and a major to offer. It is estimated that job candidates with a degree are three times as likely to be chosen for positions over those without them.

This is not a reflection of intelligence or ability. It is instead a trust in education. Employers wish to discover only the best individuals for their companies. Those who have taken years to learn strategy and interpersonal values are deemed more desirable than those who assume themselves to be beyond schooling. Businesses are seeking highly dedicated — and highly trained — professionals. They know this goal can be achieved through college.

And your decision to ignore classes is shaped then into a futility.

Higher learning is not an exercise in weakness. It is instead a way to earn the life you desire. Discover the advantage of education and receive the job you want.

The purpose of a university is to obtain knowledge — this is a truth you understand. All days are to be shaped to facts and statistics. A major must be earned through diligence and careful course selection. You wish to graduate quickly, discover your career and become the success you always knew you would be. And so you choose only the relevant classes, defining yourself to a specialized field. All words will be important. All philosophies will reflect your goals. Your degree will be without flaw.

Your education, however, may be without value.

While none could deny the importance of a major, receiving the necessary credits, none could also deny the worry of relying on too specific knowledge. By limiting your time to only the essential courses, you lose the ability to broaden your skills and enhance your mind. There is to be more to an education than the standard choices. There is instead to be an exploration of interests — and a minor degree becomes imperative.

Choose to express yourself through more than simple business. Allow each semester to have classes that are not directly related to your major. Instead offer yourself the chance to discover new ideas and relationships; merely by obtaining a minor degree.

These enable you to widen your understanding of the world. You can gain insight into such areas as history, philosophy, literature, languages, religion and more. The intention is not to merely dedicate yourself to business. It is instead to gain the reward of creative thinking. Your talents will become multi-faceted and your skills will improve. You will better yourself as an individual — and even become more appealing to potential employers, all of whom are seeking candidates that can prove diversity.

The value of receiving a minor degree cannot be ignored. While you may be forced to rearrange your graduation schedule (requiring more than those simple years you originally planned), you will still receive a far better experience.

The twists of unfamiliar pathways, the walls and tall towers: a campus is to house all knowledge, is meant to keep all secrets tucked within. But such secrets are settled far from you, a distance that makes you cringe. You’re separated by miles and awkward schedules (trying to balance family, friends and a career). The desire to obtain an education is undone by the impracticality of it. You can’t spend your hours in the car — traveling over and over again, wasting endless seconds. You can’t dedicate entire days to a classroom, avoiding your work and your home. It simply isn’t possible. You wish to learn but the logistics are too damning.

They can still, however, be countered.

Campuses are often believed to be the only choices for higher education. The physical presence of students is assumed to be essential. It isn’t. There are ways instead to gain the facts you crave without leaving the ease of your living room — distance learning.

Defined simply: distance learning is the opportunity to attend the university of your choice without having to indulge in any on site experiences. Instead classes can be conducted with the aid of a computer. Lectures and assignments can be accessed through email, message boards and virtual chats. This allows any individual to receive the information they need without having to trudge to an actual campus. All facts are traded virtually.

And this becomes invaluable for those who lack the time — or ability — to seek out traditional surroundings. No longer will their wish for higher education be denied. They can instead utilize the Internet to gain a degree and maintain their current schedules. With the distance learning option the notion of college can be shaped into a modern (and better) thing.

The miles are no longer needed. A screen will instead provide relief. You can now receive the credits you want and the major you once thought to be an impossibility.

Life is a collection of complications. You know this all too well, have seen it proven in your day to day routines. There are endless obligations — the demands of family, friends and unforgiving managers. Every hour is defined by duty. Every instant must be scheduled carefully. You stuff your weeks with countless events; and the result is exhaustion. You have no energy left to give. You have no patience to spare. There is far too much to accomplish and school therefore is branded an impossibility.

You have always wished to pursue higher education. But the goal was replaced with the strains of real life, was shaped eventually into a dream. There was never any time to travel to a campus, to slip classes between your career. You resigned yourself instead to the sad lack of a degree.

Distance learning, however, offers a far better alternative.

The concept of distance learning is one of simplicity. Students can attend courses with the aid of a screen, seeking out all lessons online. They remain connected to professors by email and forums, while accessing assignments from the web. And this is vital in receiving an education.

Because, by gaining information from your computer (rather than having to travel to classrooms, walk the endless miles of campuses), you can discover a rare freedom: scheduling can be made easier; flexibility can be found. You can seek out lectures when it is convenient to you. You can work on papers from the comforts of home. Your education can be tailored to the demands of your life — allowing you to learn as move throughout your day.

Such an advantage is essential for those who cannot spend time on a campus. It allows them to still earn the degree they crave without sacrificing their sanity (trying to redefine their routines).

Distance learning is a value that can’t be denied. For those who are already overwhelmed it can become the much needed relief.

Solitude is essential for learning — this is your belief, earned after so many failed attempts of studying with your friends, being distracted by the endless teases. All lessons were turned into laughter. All facts became gossip. It was an exercise in disaster; and you soon discovered that working on your own yielded far better results. You could concentrate without worry. You can memorize without distraction. The notion of seeking aid from others has been branded futile. You are, you know, more likely to succeed without any interferences.

But such success could be magnified if you only had the proper assistance.

Collaborate learning is a concept few truly understand. The idea of relying on others for information, on studying with the aid of groups, seems too often to be counterintuitive. Individuals assume that there is no value to find in this.

They’re wrong.

Instead collaborative learning is a proven process that helps to develop an education and make lessons easier to understand (and ultimately apply).

Explained simply: this concept is centered in the belief that group thinking is valuable. Individuals work together, each taking on an equal role and dissecting facts. These facts are then offered to others and are debated. This causes a reaction of sharper insights and creative arguments. All involved sample from each other’s inspirations. New philosophies are learned and conversations provide a greater understanding of the material. This is not the simple memorization of pages. It’s instead the exploration of them.

And victory has been found from attempting this.

Collaborative learning is not a gathering of friends. It is instead a grouping of those who truly wish to better themselves. All efforts are intense and pragmatic — ensuring that knowledge, and not distraction, is earned. It is an interactive experience that helps to bolster the absorption of all facts.

And this allows for far better grades and far less worry. A collaboration ensures convenience.

Ignore the solitary seconds. Consider dialogue instead.

An assignment sprawls upon the screen. It’s demanding your attention, flickering as it waits for the essential answers. And you intend to offer them but… your focus is waning, captured by the ease of the Internet. All attempts to research fail; all desires to study fade. You become interested instead in the endless amusements of the online world — searching through them, delighting in the many games. It’s such a simple thing to avoid schoolwork when it’s offered only through a computer. There is no disapproving stare from a professor. There is no constant chides of a deadline. The responsibility is replaced instead to comfort.

But that comfort is eventually replaced to poor grades — because you didn’t do the necessary work. You instead merely played.

Distance learning is an obvious reward. For those seeking higher education (but lacking the ability to be on campuses) it offers convenience. All assignments can be traded within forums and email, allowing a home to become a classroom.

But too often does this tempt students to become lazy with their efforts. The lack of an instructor — coupled with the many distractions of the Internet — allow individuals to procrastinate, assuming that deadlines are flexible. This is simply not true; and many discover the dangers of ignoring their work as soon as the semester comes to a close and their grade point averages have tumbled.

Students who choose distance learning therefore must be able to remain independent. There must be an understanding of the diligence required with this option, as well as self-examination. All must recognize their flaws — determining whether they can balance school and life, abstain from using the Internet as a source of entertainment.

If there is any doubt that this can be accomplished, an education must instead be sought in the traditional way. A campus will provide the necessary structure and rules, ensuring that knowledge is gained — and not simply ignored.

Distance demands dedication.

Panic is not a familiar companion. You have been without it through the days of your life, have been greeted only with smiles. There have been no concerns to consider. There have been no burdens of stress. You have been fortunate instead — with the efforts of school always branded easy. Knowledge was never to be a challenge. It was instead to be a reward; and you earned it always.

But now you merely fret over every single page. College has shaped your seconds into miseries. You worry about your studies, about the competitive snarls of your peers. You despise the constant assignments and demands, the need for perfection. Sleep has been forgotten. Health has been neglected. And you remain perpetually hunched in your chair, sore and exhausted.

An education is not as you imagined. It’s instead a terror — and the stress is overwhelming.

As of 2010 85 percent of students admit to being panicked each day (unable to keep pace with their studies and their obligations). 60 percent of those individuals confess to skipping classes on more than one occasion, just to find some relief in their routines. And 33 percent of all first year students will eventually leave school completely, unable to bear the strain.

Stress is a genuine problem and it must be addressed by all individuals; including you.

Understand what is causing your concerns. Recognize if specific assignments, classes or peers are frustrating you. Know when you are most upset and when you are finally able to relax; and then generate ways to balance these two feelings.

By determining what is making you stressed you can better combat it. Do not allow the sensation to simply grow. Statistics do not favor success if you do. You must instead acknowledge the problem and then find its origins. Only then can you create the necessary methods to ease it.

Know the causes to reshape the effects. Admit your worries before they escalate.

It’s an unhappy realization — earned as you walk through the doors of your latest class, are greeted by the endless aisles of faces and notebooks. All hopes of an intimate education are suddenly shattered. There’s no connection to find among the chaos. There’s just the search for a seat. And that proves to be challenging: a room is already almost filled, leaves you struggling for a position. You manage to tuck yourself in a corner, must glance around the distracting heights of your peers just to see a blackboard. And your professor doesn’t notice you. He can’t, not in this wave of strangers. You’re now an anonymity, unseen.

And that truth offers no relief.

The need to experience more than broad sweeps of an education is felt by many students; but they fear it can never be achieved. Classrooms are too massive, denying any chance for camaraderie. No teachers can know their pupils. The time must instead be giving to outlining assignments.

This loneliness can be combated, however. Familiarity can be gained. Students must simply understand the value of collaborative learning and seek out their instructors.

Collaborative learning — as its name implies — is the efforts of many individuals, working together to discover an understanding of the chosen material. For those who are craving a stronger relationship with their teachers this process can be invaluable.

Join a professor’s study group. Become part of his routine. The intention is to interact with him, ensuring that he learns who you are and how you think. Gain a connection, proving yourself to be more than just a simple student. You can instead be remembered. And this will grant you the confidence to offer your opinions and debate all philosophies. Your education will be shaped to better experiences and better rewards.

Through collaborative learning you can understand your teacher and enable him to become aware of you. And this is vital for those craving more than anonymity.

Failure is imminent. This is your great fear, is murmured with the beginning of every hour. You worry about succeeding. You fret over learning. A university is not the wonder you wished it to be. It’s instead a demand for your sanity; and you spend each day reminding yourself of the possible costs: losing a scholarship, being forced to leave, returning in shame to your home. So much could go wrong and the possibilities consume your every thought. But this is necessary, you believe. You must forever be aware of what you risk by making even one single mistake.

You offer yourself unreasonable standards — and then you become stunned when the stress eventually overwhelms you.

College is never the simple event students expect it to be. It is far different than their high school obligations and, for many, it can cause anxiety. This feeling is intensified, however, when individuals continually remind themselves about the dangers of failing.

Classes are challenging; assignments are forever given. There is pressure to succeed in all elements — to be both the valedictorian and the social master. And some students try to maintain their levels of perfection by constantly warning themselves about what will happen if they don’t give everything they have at all times. They frighten themselves with talks of missed deadlines and low test scores, the plummet of grades. Every day becomes an echo of the potential problems.

And this only serves to increase stress.

Worrying over possible complications is the best way to ensure those complications occur. By not offering yourself time to simply relax (focusing on the positive rather than the impending catastrophes), you strain your mind, body and esteem. Emotions become wild; health deteriorates; and your ability to study is lost completely. Stress is the only component you can recognize and it is not worthy.

You must therefore remember to breathe. Don’t focus on what could happen. Keep yourself thoroughly within the present instead.

The endless courses, the potential credits: you are soon to choose your semester schedule, will be plotting out the hours to come. The decisions aren’t easy ones, you’ve discovered. There are so many classes that tempt you. There are so many interests to address. You have forever been dominated by your impulses; and they are all demanding for you to give in now, to submit to the excitement of unique experiences. College is — after all — meant to offer more than a simple education. It’s instead to provide you with the chance to discover new ideas. And you want to indulge in them all before the year is through.

This desire is understandable. It is also, however, a mistake.

Students can become overwhelmed by the endless options available at school. Classes of all forms are offered, and each can appeal. When a major has already been chosen, however, the credits sought must reflect it. Variety is not the wisdom it’s thought to be.

All majors are presented with specific requirements — courses that will enable individuals to achieve the necessary knowledge, earn essential strategies for the future. When a student decides to fill his schedule with alternative classes, however, he creates a complication for himself: obtaining a degree will become a longer process and time will be lost. The demands of a major must be met. If they are continually replaced with other credits, though, then the semester will have to be carried over into another year. This is not a benefit.

It is essential therefore that students choose their needed classes first. Be certain all decisions are relevant to an intended major, and don’t stuff a schedule with simple whims. The purpose is to graduate as quickly as possible. This becomes a challenge when efforts are being offered to too many extracurriculars, however.

Understand what a major requires and then choose courses that complement it. Don’t submit to the need for mere thrills.

It’s the steady depletion of a bank account. It’s the unfortunate revelation — college is expensive, you’ve discovered. Meals must be paid for; outfits must be purchased; and a car consumes pennies with every mile, with gasoline prices climbing ever higher (and ever more inconvenient). The little costs of an education are proving problematic, if only because you never considered them before. All concern was given to earning the necessary grades, to crafting the perfect entry essay. The price of a university wasn’t contemplated… until now.

And you begin to wonder how you’re meant to pursue learning when you’re fretting about how to afford it.

For many the costs of a traditional education are too great of a strain. Even with financial aid there are constant tediums of lunches, cars and the proper clothes (because style is essential when surrounded by peers. That’s a philosophy that can’t be denied). Money is required — and it’s not always available.

Online education, however, removes the need for it. Individuals will no longer have to offer their funds to the aggravating expenses: an education can be earned with the simple aid of a computer. No commute is needed. No fashions are craved. All focus can be given to learning, not to scrounging up dollars for the extra costs.

By choosing to work from home individuals will spare themselves the gasoline worries and quests for supplies. They instead will need only a screen and a quiet location. All worries will therefore be replaced to convenience.

And this is coupled with the unexpected value of online courses being significantly lower than their traditional counterparts. The price of an education can be reduced — and this will ensure that bank accounts do not lose their precious coins. Instead savings can be maintained.

A distance learning option is ideal for those without excess funds to spend. All expenses can be tailored to necessity, rather than frustration. An education can finally be afforded.

There once was a time when you were happy. You remember it, even if the days seem too distant now, the recollections curled vague and surreal. You were not devoted to your education then. Instead you had a collection of little hobbies, passions, reliefs. They were yours to enjoy — and the indulgence was always welcomed, was used to counter the monotony of life.

Now, however, there seems to be no time for such things. You are scrambling instead toward a degree, working hard to fulfill the demands of your major. All seconds have become tributes to studying. There is no moment offered to relaxation. There is only the constant quest to succeed — and the stress that always seems to follow.

Students must dedicate themselves to knowledge. This is understood by all to be the purpose of a university. But refusing to offer yourself occasional hobbies will serve no intention beyond generating panic. Your mind cannot sustain the perpetual stream of facts and figures. The strain will be too much. It is essential therefore that you create ways to relax your thoughts and grant them a reprieve, however brief.

Choose a pastime. Discover what makes you content, rather than what will simply help your major. Ignore all classes and routines. Instead find a passion that is purely selfish: meant to offer nothing beyond a grin. Allow it to become part of your schedule, setting aside at least one hour a week to maintain it.

For many students this seems to be a waste, keeping them from their essential studies. But stress can creep into any mind if it becomes overwhelmed. Having a hobby will ensure that all excess energy is channeled productively and intentionally — rather than being ignored and causing anxiety.

Ensure your own success. Choose a passion to pursue and find satisfaction. An education will have little meaning if it can’t be enjoyed. Be certain therefore that you are happy once again.
